Mega-Catch™ Mosquito Trap Reviews

Mega-Catch™ Mosquito Traps –

EnviroSafe Technologies manufactures the Mega-Catch™ range of Mosquito Traps, which have been available in the U.S. since 2002.  What differentiates Mega-Catch™ from the likes of Mosquito Magnet®, Flowtron® and SkeeterVac is that they do not use propane to produce CO2 and offer an innovative attractant system.

Introduced in 2011 the Pro 900 Series replaces the earlier 600/800 series mosquito traps.
  1. Pro 900 Ultra Mosquito Trap (CO2 ready)
  2. Pro 900 Premier XC with CO2 upgrade option
  3. Pro 900 Premier
  4. Pro 900 Alpha

Mega-Catch™ traps use a combination of sensory signals including visible and invisible light from an integrated lighting display, color, shape, movement, vibration, texture from an exhaust skirt and infra red heat sources to attract mosquitoes.  Enticed to the trap, mosquitoes are swept through a fan and into either a catch bag or a wet catch container.  Mega-Catch™ maintain their Mosquito Traps don’t need Carbon Dioxide (CO2) to attract mosquitoes however they do offer an optional CO2 slow gas release system on their flagship Ultra trap.

The system is entirely optional i.e. while the system is designed to increase capture rates (by as much as 400%) it is not essential to the effective operation of the Traps.  Even without the system, or with the system turned off, the Traps will catch significant numbers of mosquitoes and other biting insects.

The Ultra comes CO2 ready and contains all the hardware needed to connect the trap to a CO2 cylinder (not included).  An optional upgrade kit (sold separately) is also available for the Premier XC trap which converts this trap to top-of-the-line Ultra specifications, making it CO2 capable. The Ultra and Premier XC models incorporate a multi-functional programmable timer and Mosquito Attracting Stimuli settings (MAS). The MAS settings provide thousands of options, enabling the traps to be customized and fine-tuned to target specific mosquito species.

The use of attractants is optional in all their traps.  Mega-Catch™ Fragrance Strips contain minute quantities of synthetic Octenol and other specially formulated ingredients which are designed to attract mosquitoes and other biting insects including biting midges (no-see-ums), sand flies and black flies. The company maintain their traps are self-serviceable, and simple enough that customers don’t need to send them away for service or repair; but can easily do this themselves.  Customer Service ratings appear high as a result of this feature, with a number of favorable reviews from customers in relation to both their Premier and Ultra traps.  One customer testimonial says “When my Mega- Catch units needed service, not only was I able to download the complete service and parts manuals online, but Envirosafe sent me free of charge all the parts needed to upgrade my two units to the latest production configuration, and provided free advice on repairs”. Mega-Catch™ have had independent tests conducted on their traps against competitors such as Mosquito Magnet®, Lentek™ (Koolatron™) and Flowtron® all showing that their traps outperform the competition Source.

What they Say:

Mega-Catch™ Pro 900 Ultra

“This product is amazing!!! Please read on. I keep seeing people on here talk about catching 6 or 10 Mosquitoes per night. I catch thousands a night with this trap. I have 2 girls under age 3 and last year, we had so many Mosquitoes that we couldn’t even use our yard. Now, we get only an occasional mosquito bite. You have to read how to setup the trap to catch Mosquitoes. source

“The Mega-Catch Octenol Lures do just what they are advertised to do – draw mosquitoes and that makes me a happy camper.source

Mega-Catch™ Pro 900 Premier XC

Opinion is divided and people seem to either love this trap or hate it.

“I bought this after some research and consistent bad reviews for the Mosquito Magnet. Opening the box was disappointing (due to the price), but I thought I’d give it a try. Without the CO2 hookup it worked no better than my zapper light, but seemed to kill less moths. I finally got around to getting a CO2 tank and hooking it up. 4 days later,..OMG…mosquito decimation!! I had actually forgotten about it but had noticed the dramatic drop in the number of mosquitoes at our front door. When I checked the trap, I was stunned. Then I emptied it and could not believe how many mosquitoes were there. There were 2 things that really impressed me with this unit:
1- How many mosquitoes it caught. Truly astonishing.
2- How many other insects it did not catch. To target this insect so well, what more could you ask for?  I will report back if I have any problems, but so far 5 stars*****.”  source

Mega-Catch Pro 900 Premier

“This is a simple and very effective catcher. The user has the option of two types of operation:
–  wet catch – using the included 1 liter bucket to catch
– dry catch – using the included dry “net”

These catchers work best (in New England) when using so-called “wet catch”. Wet catch just means using water/bucket to drown them vs sucking them in and pushing them into a dry net. With wet catch, refill and check the catch “bucket” every 3-4 days because the fan blowing down into it causes evaporation of the water.”  source

Mega-Catch Pro 900 Alpha

“This quiet machine helps reduce mosquito activity around our deck and backyard. Runs continuously but inconspicuously. Have used it for a few weeks and so far we can tell the difference. Nice product!” source

“Works for moths and a few mosquitoes. Bought 2, and on 1 the fan died within the first three weeks. Mosquito Magnet, when it works, is far, far better for mosquitoes, even when both traps are used with Octenol. However, it cost much more, and also stops working prematurely even with CO2 cartridge cleaning. So, I would have to say they are about equal in terms of value per dollar spent. source

Mega-Catch™ Ultra MCU-800 (Discontinued)

“I have had two of the Mega-Catch Ultra traps for five years and I have nothing but praise for them. Not only do they catch mosquitoes but also those black flies that look like house flies but bite like crazy. And the customer service is the best I have ever received on any item I’ve purchased on the net.” source

“I am going on my third summer season using the Mega Catch `Ultra’ and I am thrilled with the results. Our home is located next to a flood irrigated field which has kept us from enjoying our backyard during the summer for years. Since using the machine I have learned that to get the best results, connect the machine to a CO2 tank and use the `wet’ dish.” source

Mega-Catch Premier MCP-800 (Discontinued)

“It’s amazing the difference in reviews! I couldn’t go in my backyard without being swarmed with mosquito’s before I hooked this up. After I hooked it up the mosquito’s were nearly gone. Sure I would see a few over 30 minutes but beforehand I was killing several over a minute. I never even bothered with the lure. I just used some soapy water and put it where the mosquito’s were the worst”.  source

Mega-Catch Alpha MCA-600 (Discontinued)

“It’s possible that this trap may work for some other mosquito species, but if your problem is the Asian tiger mosquito, the Mega-Catch Alpha doesn’t do any good”. source

“The most effective way for the trap to work is to run it continuously for the first 6-8 weeks. After a couple of weeks there was a noticeable difference in the number of bites we were getting! We even ran it in the house for several nights and have not had a mosquito bite inside the house since then!” source
