Mosquito Trap Performance

Performance

It is clear from the many documented studies and consumer reports on mosquito traps that some (but obviously not all) mosquito trap manufacturers are producing traps which are able to catch large quantities of mosquitoes and that this can lead to or assist in the control of mosquito problems.  Why then do some consumers complain that their traps don’t catch mosquitoes or haven’t eliminated the mosquito problem?  The problem is multi-faceted.

First not all traps are as effective as the manufacturer might lead us to believe.  Claims such as “eliminates all mosquito problems” are nonsense.  Traps do catch mosquitoes and can assist in reducing mosquito populations over a period of time as part of a mosquito control program which includes eliminating breeding areas and spraying where necessary.

Dr Janet McAllister of the Center for Disease and Protection in Ft. Collins on “What is an Integrated Mosquito Management Program?”.  Dr McAllister emphasizes the responsibility of the public to not only be aware of their surroundings which could be causing mosquito problems but to take personal precautions by using products that are available for the domestic market today i.e. repellents and mosquito traps.

Mosquito AlertSecondly there are many species of mosquito in North America and some traps are more successful than others with all or some of those species.  We recommend that you visit the manufacturer’s website and read test results and testimonials to get some idea of whether that manufacturer’s traps are likely to work in your area.  If you know the species of mosquitoes in your area (there may be 20 or 30 species) then contact the manufacturer and ask for advice before buying.

Thirdly many performance issues appear to result from the customer not following the manufacturers instructions, particularly on the location of traps.  Don’t hesitate to contact the manufacturer directly if you have a problem and if you have exhausted that option and you are still not satisfied then ask for your money back.  Most responsible distributors / manufacturers have some form of return policy even if that involves a restocking fee for the return of a used trap.
