In 2009, three new models were released:
- Mosquito Magnet® Executive
- Mosquito Magnet® Independence
- Mosquito Magnet® Patriot
As with most other traps on the market in North America, Mosquito Magnets® use a standard 20lb cylinder or “barbecue tank” to supply domestic propane which is combusted to produce CO2, water vapour and heat to attract mosquitoes. All Mosquito Magnet® traps, with the exception of the Executive, operate like a BBQ burner which runs continually (24/7) until the propane tank runs dry. Mosquito Magnet® also offer octenol and Lurex3™ (lactic acid) as additional attractants for all traps.
The new Mosquito Magnet® Executive model features a custom rechargeable battery and new "Smart Technology" that offers 5 different user-friendly setting options - including 4 fuel savings modes that extend the life of the propane tank. It can also automatically start up/power down when the temperature reading is above or below 50 degrees (temperature in which mosquito breeding processes ususlaly start). There is also an easy to read LCD panel on the front of the trap which allows the user to see when then the battery is low, the propane is out or even when the propane nozzle is clogged.
There have been numerous issues with this continuous use as it can result in burnouts or blockages, a technical issue which has led to thousands of Mosquito Magnets® failing after a relatively short period and American Biophysics Corporation facing a massive customer return problem. There are reviews expressing frustration with start up issues, propane blockage/clogging issues, regulator problems and the cost of maintaining the traps given that the average tank of propane lasts 21 days of continuous operation. When the company went into receivership in 2006, Woodstream Corporation purchased its assets. In news reports, Jonathan N. Savage of Shectman, Halperin, Savage LLP, the company’s temporary receiver, was quoted in the Providence Business News citing “operational issues – we’re not sure yet” when asked how the company’s financial troubles arose. Possibly some of the many reviews on the internet could indicate a design problem. For example one reviewer says “the product has serious design flaws and simply doesn't stay operating” Source.
What they Say:
Mosquito Magnet® reviewers have very positive comments in relation to the performance of the first three trap models, for example, one reviewer of the Mosquito Magnet® Liberty Plus commented “we are completely happy and are really enjoying our unscreened pool now” another commented on their Liberty model “End of Week One, 100 - 200 captured, end of Week Two 60 - 100 captured.” A reviewer of the Defender wrote “Within three days the trap was completely full of mosquitoes and “no see-ums” Source.
However, such positive comments in relation to performance could be counteracted with the negative comments about the reliability of Mosquito Magnet® traps. See our pages entitled “Complaints / Common Issues / Problems”.
In 2009 Mosquito Magnet® unveiled a new line of traps and announced an improved customer service regime. Reviews for the new traps are hard to find but we have located a few reviews on amazon.com and buzzillions.com.
Mosquito Magnet® Independence
"Works but briefly and then very unreliable." Source
"The unit started up with no problem and worked very well catching hundreds of mosquitoes every day for 8 days until the unit shut down for no reason ... I returned the unit ...for another brand new unit. Started the new unit and it worked fine for exactly 7 days when overnight it shut down for no reason... I emailed a critical report to Mosquito Magnet and evidently they could not have cared less since they never responded". Source
Mosquito Magnet® Liberty
"We still have mosquitos in the evening.... It doesn't do what it says it will do."
Mosquito Magnet® Executive
"Great Investment" and went on to say "....Two days afer we set it up we hardly had any mosquitoes in our yard even in front of the house...I can be outside without having to swat away any mosquitoes even at dusk..." . Source
